Forsaken Nebula
IC 5068 | Cygnus | 20h 50' 48”, 42° 31' 00"
A lesser-known emission nebula in Cygnus, sitting just south of the much more famous North America and Pelican nebulae. IC 5068 is part of the same vast star-forming complex, roughly 1,600 light-years away, but is often overlooked in favour of its brighter neighbours. The nebula is threaded with dark dust lanes that silhouette against the glowing hydrogen gas behind them, creating a rich, layered texture.
What makes this target rewarding is its subtlety — it's faint and requires long integration times to bring out, but the interplay of emission and dark nebulosity gives it a depth that rewards close inspection.
