Rosette Nebula
NGC 7000 and IC 5070 | Cygnus | 21h 01' 48", 44° 12' 00"
A pair of emission nebulae in Cygnus, separated by a dark lane of obscuring dust known as LDN 935. NGC 7000 (the North America Nebula) gets its name from its unmistakable resemblance to the continent, while IC 5070 (the Pelican Nebula) sits just to its east, shaped like a pelican in profile. Both are part of the same vast cloud complex, roughly 1,600 light-years away.
The region is a hotbed of active star formation, with particularly dramatic features along the dark boundary between the two nebulae — where young stars are eroding and ionising dense columns of gas. The entire complex is illuminated by a central star, likely the hot O-type star J205551.3+435225, hidden behind the dust lane.
