NGC 2359 | Canis Major | 7h 18' 30", -13° 14' 00"

An emission nebula in Canis Major, about 11,960 light-years away, shaped by the fierce stellar wind of a Wolf-Rayet star at its centre. Wolf-Rayet stars are massive, hot, and short-lived — they burn through their fuel so fast that they shed their outer layers in powerful winds, sculpting the surrounding gas into bubble-like shells. The distinctive "winged" shape that gives this nebula its name comes from the interaction between that stellar wind and a neighbouring molecular cloud.

At just a few hundred thousand years old, the central star is already nearing the end of its life and will likely end as a supernova.
